The solar electricity generation system is one of the company’s sustainability initiatives. It also aids Kentwool’s vision to become the premier wool innovation and manufacturing company in the world.
Mark Kent, president and chief executive officer of KentWool, said “Having such a bold corporate vision statement demands an innovative approach to everything we do, including how we use resources to fuel our operations.”
“We didn’t want to just talk about caring about the environment, we wanted to begin doing our part in a high impact way and felt this was a great time to continue investing in our company’s future, while increasing our overall efficiency level,” he said.
The solar system was designed and installed by Sunstore Solar Energy Solutions, based in Greer. Its utility-interactive design creates electricity from sunlight and incorporates 72 photovoltaic panels mounted on a series of poles to track sunlight east and west during the day.
Lynn Barrett, KentWool’s chief financial officer, said the system is a smart investment that will increase the company’s operational efficiency and pay for itself over time “while enhancing our role as a corporate citizen of South Carolina.”
The company hopes to “expand the system capabilities in the future to further offset a major portion of the company’s manufacturing requirements,” Barrett said.
