South Carolina is Growing in the Wind Department
SC-owned utility announces plan to test wind power
By: The Associated Press
GEORGETOWN, S.C. — South Carolina’s state-owned utility hopes its answer is blowing in the wind.
Santee Cooper officials said Monday it will launch weather buoys next month to measure winds off Georgetown and Little River. The idea is to find the best place to put an offshore platform to measure upper-level winds similar to those that might power a wind turbine.
Last year, Santee Cooper began testing whether small-scale wind turbines can generate power along the coast.
Crews installed a pole at Georgetown High with sensors to measure wind speed, direction and frequency. Another was installed at Coastal Carolina in Conway.
The utility said it was testing to see if the sites could provide enough wind power for 1.8-kilowatt turbines.
