Weatherizing Your Home and Save Money

While some folks are trying to save green in this tough economy, Others are looking to go green.

The federal stimulus package provides more than $58.9 million to weatherize South Carolina homes.

The goal – Energy efficiency.

A 30-year-old home was costing Connie Hudson and her family comfort and money.

“When we first moved into the house, it was really drafty. You could feel the wind coming through the sliding glass doors.”

So Hudson started improving her home and making it energy efficient. She changed the windows and closed up holes in her air ducts.

The final result: Her energy bills dropped 30%.

“There are some very affordable processes that can be taken to make the home more energy efficient now more than ever,” says Craig Fletcher, who’s with Cutter’s Insulation Incorporated.

He says the first step is getting an energy audit. That includes camera scans, air tests, and duct inspections.

Hudson thinks it’s a worthwhile investment.

“You can have your heat at a very comfortable temperature as opposed to turning it down low, which is what a lot of people in neighborhood have to do so that they don’t have terrible utility bills.”

Basic improvements that are helping people like Connie Hudson save some green.
