Thanks to a $105,000 grant from SC DHEC and a funding match by the South Carolina Public Railways, two locomotives are being retrofitted to burn cleaner diesel fuel, which translates to cleaner air in and around Charleston.

“By making that burn leaner and cleaner that reduces sulfur oxide emitted from smoke,” said Jeff Davis, COO of the South Carolina Public Railways. “Sulfur went from 35ppm to 15pm.”

It is a significant reduction considering the amount of work the engines put in as they move cargo around the port facility. The retrofitting was a voluntary effort on the part of the South Carolina Pulblic Railways, one that’s being commended by DHEC.

“Reducing diesel emissions is one of the most important public health challenges we face today,” SC DHEC’s Myra Reece said.

The grant will fund completion of design, engineering and construction drawings for a planned $2.5 million state-of-the-art facility on West Lane, said Al Babinicz, executive director of Clemson Area Transit, or CAT.

“It will be a smart-green facility that will be designed to grow with us and give us more space, more flexibility and contain energy-efficient measures to drive down costs,” he said.

Design will incorporate solar energy, stormwater recycling for washing buses and landscape watering, and other Earth-friendly features that Clemson Mayor Larry Abernathy said continues efforts by the city and adjoining Clemson University toward greater environmental stewardship.

If approved for federal stimulus funding, the project could be completed in about nine months, Babinicz said.

Construction would create new jobs and would have “a ripple effect through the community” by providing jobs and also because materials will be purchased locally to the greatest extent possible, Babinicz said.

The facility, which is on an existing bus route, will save tax dollars by providing a central facility and increased security for the fleet of 26 buses currently parked outdoors in various locations across the city, Babinicz said.

1. Ninety percent of companies with large datacenters will need to add more power and cooling within the next two years.

2. A study by McKinsey found that among a total of 458 servers at four production datacenters, 32 percent (146 in all) were running at or below 3 percent peak and average utilization. These types of zombie servers are prime candidates for unplugging to free up space and power and reduce cooling needs.

3. Speaking of which, companies can reap a 65 percent reduction in server count through virtualization — though your mileage may vary.

4. Increasing the set point temperature in your datacenter by just one degree can reduce energy consumption by 4 to 5 percent.

5. Datacenters produce around 0.3 percent of the world’s CO2 emissions. The airline industry produces 0.6 percent, and the steel industry produces 1.0 percent.

6. According to a study conducted by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (PDF), DC (direct current) delivery systems can be 20 percent or more efficient than current AC (alternating current) delivery systems, be more reliable, and potentially cost less in the long run.
